Pinoys seen to spend less on phone ‘load’ - former telecoms chief

MANILA, Philippines - Filipinos are expected to spend less on mobile telephone prepaid call and text credits and other forms of “highly discretionary spending” in the months ahead, as consumers struggle to cope with the looming rice shortage and soaring food prices.Rep. Joseph Santiago, former chief of the National Telecommunications Commission, said telecommunication service providers will encounter a significant decline in prepaid load sales as households scramble to adjust their budgets to allow more spending for food.

“In fact, retailers are already getting squeezed. Many sari-sari stores that used to sell up to P3,000-worth of load every day now manage to sell only P1,000 daily,” said Santiago, chairman of the House committee on information and communications technology.

“In hard times, highly arbitrary and optional consumer spending are usually the first to go,” he said.

Retail sales of prepaid call and text credits, made popular by the award-winning “pasaload” scheme, have been a powerful revenue driver for telecommunication service providers that, in turn, have been key generators of economic activity nationwide.

To cope with the potential slowdown, Santiago said he sees the country’s two leading mobile telephone service providers - Smart Communications Inc. and Globe Telecom Inc. - stepping up their promotional activities in the months ahead.

The mobile telephone boom has established the Philippines as the world’s text messaging capital.

The country had a total of 50.3 million mobile telephone users at the end of 2007, or around 57 percent of the national population of 88.7 million.

The average Filipino mobile telephone user sends 10 to 15 text messages every day. This implies that a total of 755 million text messages are sent daily.

Santiago said he still sees Smart and Globe picking up new subscribers in the months ahead.

“Their subscribers will continue to grow, but ‘the law of large numbers’ will keep them from increasing their subscribers at last year’s rate of 25 to 30 percent,” he said.

Smart and Globe expect to add a combined four to five million in new users this year. - GMANews.TV

Second-generation showbiz royalty

(From left, clockwise) KC Concepcion, Luis Manzano, Jennica Garcia, and the Gutierrez twins Richard and Raymond are some of the young stars who are considered showbiz royalty.

They have showbiz blood running in their veins. With a surname that is familiar to most showbiz denizens, these young stars have celebrity parents who are more than willing to show them the ropes.

These showbiz kids are the products of a gene pool that boasts of talent, charm and mass appeal. Their refreshing aura coupled with their innate acting ability make for a winning combination that allows them to penetrate the highly competitive world of show business.

Feast your eyes and ears on this new generation of stars who are expected to become the pillars of tomorrow’s entertainment industry.

PEP’s list is limited to children aged 30 years old and below and those whose parents (and even grandparents) are known in showbiz circles.

Here are the top showbiz kids (in alphabetical order):

KC Concepcion

Blessed with the showbiz genes she got from celebrity parents Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion, KC Concepcion is turning out to be one of the most recognizable progenies in the entertainment scene. She is admired not only for her acting talent (honed by her theater background) but also for her humanitarian efforts. She is the National Ambassador against Hunger of the World Food Program of the United Nations and is actively involved in the Virlanie Foundation, a group for underprivileged children.

Keempee de Leon

TV host/actor-comedian Keempee de Leon is seen daily in the noontime show Eat Bulaga! alongside his father Joey de Leon. Although Keempee’s list of credits is nowhere near his father’s jampacked schedule (aside from Eat Bulaga!, Joey is seen in Mel and Joey, Takeshi’s Castle and Startalk), he hosts Kung Ako Ikaw, a reality comedy television show in the Philippines that airs three times a week on GMA-7. His mother Daria Ramirez is a character actress who was last seen in the indie film Batanes (2007).

Mark Anthony Fernandez

Mark Anthony Fernandez, Rudy Fernandez’s son with former actress Alma Moreno, has been in showbiz since he was 13 years old. Back then, he was part of the trio “Guwapings” along with Jomari Yllana and Eric Fructuoso. The group has been dissolved but he never ran out of projects from ABS-CBN. But in 2007, he switched networks and became part of Impostora and Kamandag. Now that he is an exclusive GMA-7 star, we can expect this 27-year old actor to shine even more in a field where his father is touted as one of the most enduring stars of his generation.

Jennica Garcia

With a face as sweet as her mother Jean Garcia’s and bearing the same confidence as her father, former matinee idol Jigo Garcia, Jennica Garcia made her presence felt in showbiz with her sudden appearance in TV shows and movies. She became known as Mart Escudero’s onscreen partner in the GMA-7 show Boys Nxt Door and the Regal Entertainment horror flick Hide and Seek (2007). She reportedly has three projects in the pipeline: Now and Forever, Ultraelectromagnetic Love, and Ang Nanay Kong Aswang.

Raymond and Richard Gutierrez

Twin brothers Richard and Raymond Gutierrez, both 24 years old, are the sons of ‘60s matinee idol Eddie Gutierrez and talent manager Annabelle Rama. Now, Richard is taking up the same route as his father by being one of the most sought-after leading men of his generation. His movies shown on Valentine’s Day are blockbuster hits and his primetime shows are among the top-rating shows of GMA-7. Meanwhile, Raymond is making a name for himself by hosting various shows such as Showbiz Central and Pinoy Idol.

Maxene Magalona

She can rap just as well as her father Francis Magalona but Maxene Magalona is content being in the limelight as a versatile actress. Her mother is Pia Arroyo while her grandparents were movie greats, the late Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran. Maxene showed her comedic skills in the GMA-7 sitcom Daddy di do du and is now one of the leading ladies of Richard Gutierrez in Kamandag.

Luis Manzano

Formerly known by the public as Vilma Santos’s beloved son Lucky, Luis Manzano is growing up to be a young man who is as quick witted and funny as his father Edu Manzano. Luis is following in his father’s footsteps down the TV host-actor trail and has even added being a MYX VJ to his impressive resumé. Luis has been hosting Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus and he recently starred opposite KC Concepcion for her anthology show I Am KC.

Lovi Poe

Singer-actress Lovi Poe is the offspring of Fernando Poe Jr. and Rowena Moran, Da King’s leading lady in a San Miguel Beer commercial. Lourdes Virginia (Lovi’s real name) wanted to be known as the singer Lovi to create her own identity apart from her famous father. But eventually she decided to use Lovi Poe as her screen name after she crossed over from the recording scene to the world of showbiz. She is now part of GMA-7’s Sine Novela Kaputol ng Isang Awit.
Vandolph Quizon

Dolphy sired 18 children with five different women but for this Top List, one of them made the cut for being the most recognizable and being below 30 years old. The Comedy King and actress-politician Alma Moreno sired a son whom they named Vandolph. He became a child star during his Ang TV days and was part of the ABS-CBN sitcom Home Along da Riles and the sketch comedy show Quizon Avenue. He is part of the action-adventure series Palos.

Oyo Sotto

The charismatic Vic Sotto and his first wife Dina Bonnevie are the parents of Oyo Boy Sotto, who now prefers to be called Oyo. He used to appear in GMA-7 shows such as Majika but he transferred to rival network ABS-CBN and became part of the fantaserye Pedro Penduko at ang mga Engkantao. The 24-year old actor is part of the drama series Prinsesa ng Banyera, where he works with the actress Kristine Hermosa who is being linked to him. His father Vic has been named the Philippine Box Office King for three years in a row (2004, 2005, and 2006). All this time, Oyo was part of the blockbuster hit Enteng Kabisote.

Other young stars who come from an illustrious family line and are showing promise in the entertainment industry are Jolo and Brian Revilla, Gabriel Valenciano, Jeremy Marquez, and the Eigenmann siblings (Ryan, Geoff and AJ). Harry Potter author goes to court

NEW YORK - Author J.K. Rowling is eager to tell a judge this week that one of her biggest fans is in fantasyland if he believes a “Harry Potter” encyclopedia he plans to publish does not violate her copyrights.

The showdown between Rowling and Steven Vander Ark is scheduled to last most of the week in US District Court in Manhattan.

Rowling is scheduled to testify Monday in a trial that is sure to generate huge interest among Harry Potter fans and the public. Her lawyer has arranged with the judge to have a private security guard for Rowling in the courtroom and for the author to spend breaks in the seclusion of a jury room — away from any die-hard Potter fans in attendance.

The trial comes eight months after Rowling published her seventh and final book in the widely popular Harry Potter series. The books have been published in 64 languages, sold more than 400 million copies and spawned a film franchise that has pulled in $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office.

Rowling brought the lawsuit last year against Vander Ark’s publisher, RDR Books, to stop publication of the “Harry Potter Lexicon.”

Rowling is actually a big fan of the Harry Potter Lexicon Web site that Vander Ark runs. But she draws the line when it comes to publishing the book and charging $24.95. She also says it fails to include any of the commentary and discussion that enrich the Web site and calls it “nothing more than a rearrangement” of her own material.

One of her lawyers, Dan Shallman, on Friday told Judge Robert P. Patterson, who will hear the trial without a jury, that Rowling “feels like her words were stolen.”

He said the author felt so personally violated that she made her own comparisons between her seven best-selling novels and the lexicon and was ready to testify about the similarities in dozens of instances.

David Saul Hammer, a lawyer for RDR Books, which plans to sell the lexicon, said the publisher will not challenge the claim by Rowling that much of the material in the lexicon infringed her copyrights.

But the judge will decide whether the use of the material by the small Muskegon, Mich., publisher was legal because it was used for some greater purpose, such as a scholarly pursuit.

In court papers filed prior to the trial, Rowling said she was “deeply troubled” by the book.

“If RDR’s position is accepted, it will undoubtedly have a significant, negative impact on the freedoms enjoyed by genuine fans on the Internet,” she said. “Authors everywhere will be forced to protect their creations much more rigorously, which could mean denying well-meaning fans permission to pursue legitimate creative activities.”

In court papers, Vander Ark, 50, said he was a teacher and school librarian in Byron Center, Mich., before recently moving to London to begin a career as a writer.

He said he joined an adult online discussion group devoted to the books in 1999 before launching his own Web site as a hobby a year later. Since then, neither Rowling nor her publisher had ever complained about anything on it, he said.

In May 2004, he said, Rowling mentioned his Web site on her own, writing, “This is such a great site that I have been known to sneak into an Internet cafe while out writing and check a fact rather than go into a bookshop and buy a copy of Harry Potter (which is embarrassing). A web site for the dangerously obsessive; my natural home.”

The Web site attracts about 1.5 million page views per month and contributions from people all over the world, Vander Ark said.

He said he initially declined proposals to convert the Web site into an encyclopedia, in part because he believed until last August that in book form, it would represent a copyright violation.

After Rowling released the final chapter in the Harry Potter series that same month, Vander Ark was contacted by an RDR Books employee, who told him that publication of the lexicon would not violate copyright law, he said.

Still, to protect himself, Vander Ark said he insisted that RDR Books include a clause in his contract that the publisher would defend and pay any damages that might result from claims against him.

He said it was decided that the lexicon would include sections from the Lexicon Web site that give descriptions and commentary on individual names, places, spells and creatures from Harry Potter stories.

In his court statement, Vander Ark still sounds like a fan, saying the lexicon “enhances the pleasure of readers of the Potter novels, and deepens their appreciation of Ms. Rowling’s achievement.”

But the affection no longer seems a shared experience.

In court Friday, Hammer said Rowling’s lawyers did not want Vander Ark in the courtroom while Rowling testifies. - AP
