Can frequent cell phone use cause brain tumor?

Posted by isl30fvi3w on May 29, 2008

In the United States alone, there are over 219 million cell phone users, 2 billion worldwide, about a third of the global population. Proportionately, per capita, the Philippines is not far behind when it comes to the use of cell phones. As a matter of fact, many of us Filipinos are cell phone addicts, and most evidently ahead and more knowledgeable (“experts”) in text messaging compared to Americans or Europeans, and other Asians.

Since its inception, the cell phone has become an indispensable gadget for all users for a variety of reasons, ranging from personal security, to business efficiency, to sporting a status symbol, to serving as an expeditious, inexpensive, convenient, and unobtrusive (even confidential) means of speedy communication, anytime, anywhere.

Of late, however, concerns have resurfaced and questions raised once again as to whether the use of cell phone is safe, whether the frequent use of cell phones (held against the ear ) lead to brain tumors. Is the issue a media panic-du-jour or a real serious concern? Let us review some available data as scientifically and objectively as we can.

Landline cordless phones and cell phones use a low level form of microwave radiation to send and receive their signals. When microwaves penetrates tissue, extreme heat is formed, as in the case of microwave oven heating or cooking. So, is the microwave radiation from cell phone use (pressed against our ear and face) harming our brain, and increasing our risk of developing brain tumors?

The Swedish National Institute for Working Life disputed in April 2006 the findings of two earlier reports that cell phones were safe and had no effect on brain tumor rate. The Swedish group found “that people with more than 2,000 hours of total talk time had 3.7 times the risk of developing brain cancer when compared with nonusers. (2,000 hours is about an hour of talk time every Monday through Friday for 10 years). The study also found a 2 times increase for tumors specifically on the side of the head where the cell phone was generally used.”

The mobile phone antenna is the main source of radiofrequency (RF). Experts believe that no matter how near the cell phone is (even smack against the face), the six-tenth of a watt (typically) of RF power emitted is too low and could not be harmful to health. They also say the “type of energy emitted is non-ionizing, meaning it doesn’t cause damage to chemical bonds or DNA”. They added that the “RF energy from a cell phone falls off quickly as distance increases between the user and the antenna…” and that “hundreds of millions of people have been using cell phones and cordless phones for years…..If there were a problem, we would have seen it by now”.

A scientific fact: Some individuals using cell phones developed brain cancer, and people who have not used mobile phones at all have been victims of brain cancer, too. The annual incidence of brain cancer in the U.S.A. is about six new cases per 100,000 people, so among the millions of Americans who own mobile phones about 6,000 plus cases of brain cancer would be expected per year, even if they had not used mobile phones at all.

The Environmental Health and Safety Office “has seen no credible evidence to date that cell phones cause cancer or brain tumors… It is illogical to believe that evidence of unusual brain tumors is covered up when there are hundred’s of millions of people using cell phones worldwide.”

From my perspective, pending the results of the hundreds of researches simultaneously ongoing around the world on this particular issue, it behooves all of us mobile phone users to exercise caution, like using landline phones when possible, limiting mobile phone use, and if possible, using text messaging instead, and using hands-free headset or speakerphone to avoid cell phone contact with our face. Growing children, who are more sensitive to RF than adults, should minimize mobile phone use, be educated about this issue, and duly instructed.

David Foster on Charice: Tonight, a star is born!

FUNFARE
By RICARDO F. LO

Charice’s performance (I Will Always Love You, etc.) was described as “jaw-dropping,” after which Foster told the audience which gave Charice a standing ovation, “Tonight, a star is born!”

The Philippine Star

Curtain-raiser: Arnel Pineda (featured in this corner yesterday) and the Journey are guesting on Ellen DeGeneres’ show, airing tonight in the US and in the Philippines tomorrow (May 29) night at 7 o’clock on 2nd Avenue (Cable TV). They will sing two songs, Separate Ways and After All These Years (the carrier single from the new Revelations CD). Watch it.

* * *

Two Mondays ago, Funfare reported the exclusive story about Charice’s guesting in a show famous songwriter David Foster put up for the opening of MGM Grand Casino Hotel in Foxwood, Connecticut, accompanied by exclusive photos (Charice with Foster, and fellow performers Alicia Keys and Josh Groban; not in photo was John Mayer) you see only in The STAR.

A few days later, Funfare published another “scoop,” this time about another show Foster was mounting in Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas last May 23, called David Foster and Friends. Here’s what happened in that star-studded event in which Charice got another standing ovation, showered with praise by her co-performers:

Charice’s performance (I Will Always Love You, etc.) was described as “jaw-dropping,” after which Foster told the audience which gave Charice a standing ovation, “Tonight, a star is born!”

The other performers included Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Kenny G, Babyface, Groban, Katharine McPhee, Brian McKnight, Boz Scaggs, Peter Cetera and many others.

As soon as Charice appeared onstage, she asked (in Tagalog): “Marami po bang mga Filipino dito?”, adding mesmerized by the magnitude of the event, “Sobrang masaya po ako. Parang nananaginip pa po ako hanggang ngayon. Proud po ako at nire-represent ko po ang Pilipinas dito sa ibang bansa. Proud po ako at Filipino po ako. Sana po proud din po sila sa akin.”

“Never perhaps in the history of Philippine entertainment has a Filipino artist shared the stage with some of the world’s greatest performers,” gushed immigration lawyer and STAR columnist Michael Gurfinkel and his wife Millie who were in the audience. (It was the Gurfinkel couple who helped “expedite” the issuance of Charice and her mom Raquel’s US visa, after they lost their passports to a bukas-kotse gang in their native Laguna).

Said a Funfare contributor who was also there, “Charice had the audience on their feet as she received a standing ovation after each of her songs. The only other performers who received standing ovations were Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban (for his finale). After the show, Charice was showered with praise by both her co-performers and the audience.

“Bocelli had already finished his performance and was in his dressing room when he heard Charice singing onstage through the monitor. He insisted that his handlers take him backstage, so that he could be among the first to congratulate Charice. He told Charice, after her performance, ‘You have a beautiful voice; I was moved!’ “Asked how he felt having performed twice with Charice, Groban said, ‘I was backstage, getting ready to go on, and not really paying attention to the act onstage, when all of a sudden I heard the voice of a beautiful siren, and my jaw dropped. I had to stop everything and just watch her from the wings. It was marvelous!’”

An excerpt from a Vegas newspaper:

If Groban is one of Foster’s most renowned discoveries, this night truly belonged to a newer one, doe-eyed 16-year-old Filipino belter Charice, whose voice is like a jetliner taking off from her sternum.

She turned in a stunning rendition of the Whitney Houston-by-way-of-Dolly Parton hit I Will Always Love You, singing with such power and poise, it was hard to believe that she wasn’t even yet alive when the song originally became a hit on The Bodyguard soundtrack in 1992.

“Tonight, a star is born,” Foster gushed after her brief set, another grand sentiment from a man defined by them.

Rick Astley coming for concert Aug. 1
Close on the heels of the parade of foreign artists performing here, ’80s pop icon Rick Astley is also coming for a concert in Aug. 1 at the Big Dome.

Astley fans can expect their idol to sing his hit songs, including Together Forever and Never Gonna Give You Up, on the show called Rick Astley: Here and Now, produced by Mossimo Music and DMC Philippines.

Here’s a refresher backgrounder on Astley, courtesy of the producers:

Born Richard Paul Astley in Lancashire, England, Astley made an impact with his first solo outing, Never Gonna Give You Up, which was released in 1987. The song was an instant success, spending five weeks at the top of the British charts and becoming that year’s highest-selling single. Never Gonna Give You Up also topped the singles chart in the US, followed by a second number-one hit in Together Forever.

In 1991, Astley cemented his growing reputation when he was nominated for a Grammy award as Best New Artist of the Year.

Astley specialized in bouncy dance pop, but showed he was just as good at ballads when he released 1991’s Cry For Help, which reached the top of the charts in both the UK and the US. It proved to be a good year for Astley, because in 1991, he had another major hit with Whenever You Need Somebody, which sold two million copies.

To date, Astley’s total record sales have reached almost 40 million worldwide. His latest release, The Ultimate Collection: Rick Astley, which hit the market in April 2008, has already reached #17 on the UK Top 40 albums chart and is still going.

He’s even become an Internet phenomenon—in 2007, an anonymous poster tricked an estimated 25 million users into watching a video of Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up. The video was on endless repeat, giving rise to a phenomenon now known as “Rickrolling.”

(Note: Rick Astley: Here and Now is supported by MYX Music, ABS-CBN and Magic 89.9 as media partners. Before the Big Dome concert, a kick-off party will be held at Dolce Bar, at Tomas Morato, Quezon City, on July 8; at Hard Rock Makati on July 16. Lots of gimmicks, surprises and prizes await lucky Astley fans. For ticket inquiries call SM Ticketnet outlets at 911-5555; and DMC Philippines c/o Cris at 0916-3958112 and c/o Mads at 0922-7892345. Ticket prices are P5,250 for VIP, P4,200 for Patron, P3,150 for Lower Box, P2,100 for Upper Box A, P1,050 for Upper Box B and P525 for General Admission.)

The Golden Divas strike again
But before the foreign acts, have a date with Golden Divas Pilita Corrales, Carmen Pateña and Carmen Soriano in the repeat of their March hit Music Museum concert, this time at the SMX Theater at the Mall of Asia on Friday, May 30, again with Al Quinn as director and Viva Concert and Events as producer.

My friends and I watched the show at the Music Museum and it was oh-so-good that we promised to watch it again at the MOA.

More than just sing songs from yesteryear and current ones, the three divas joke around and poke fun at themselves, proving beyond any reasonable doubt that veteran singers, unlike soldiers, never fade away — they just keep on performing.

Tempered by the test of time and honed deeper by the ups and downs of loving and living, the three divas obviously now perform without the pressure of having to prove themselves, but only for the fun of it, for their own enjoyment and yours.

Do watch them. You won’t regret it. You will even ask for more, more, more — and, happily, Pilita and the two Carmens will oblige with one encore after another.

(Note: Tickets to Golden Divas are priced at P2,000 for gold seat, P1,500 for silver seat and P1,000 for bronze seat. Call Ticketnet at 911-5555 or Ticketworld at 891-9999.)

Actress-comedienne K Brosas may look tough and cocky but she admitted that she feels pressured now that she has moved to ABS-CBN, which is also the home turf of top comedians Ai-Ai delas Alas and Pokwang.

Brosas is now a Kapamilya after joining the cast of “My Girl”, the Filipino version of the original Korean telenovela. The Pinoy “My Girl” , which stars Kim Chiu,  is Brosas’ debut project in ABS-CBN.

“Of course nandoon ‘yung pressure nandoon ‘yung excitement, halo-halo. Iba ang ipapakita ko this time sa tao, kasi nasanay sila na komedyante ako, na kikay-kikay ako. Dito talaga as in sosyalista, so maganda ang pressure sa akin–nakaka-inspire,” Brosas said.

The actress however said that she doesn’t have any problem with Ai-Ai and Pokwang because she already worked with them before.

“Lahat naman yon, close ko na yan kahit ibang network pa ako; before close ko na yan si Ms. Ai-Ai kasama ko sa Backroom. Si Ms. Pokwang, kaibigan, ok na before pa. Walang naging problema at masaya ako,” Brosas said.

Villainess
Brosas plays the main villain in ABS-CBN’s version of the hit Korean telenovella.

“Hindi comedy ang levelling ko sa “My Girl” kung hindi serious acting. Ismir lang ako ng ismir kasi ako ang kontrabida,” Brosas revealed.

She said that she decided to move to ABS-CBN after her contract with GMA-7 expired.

“Actually wala na akong kontrata, so walang kontrata tapos na ang kontrata ko sa “Bitoy’s sa show ko sa GMA. Tapos biglang in-offer sa akin itong role,” Brosas said, adding that even though the role is her first heavy drama, and is a departure from her usual comedic style, it was too big a break for her to pass up.

“Parang kapag pinalagpas ko ito parang manghihinayang ka ng sobra. Kasi kakaiba talaga siya  at saka isa ako sa main cast. First time kong mabibigyan ng ganito kalaking break,” Brosas added.

The actress said she accepted the project because of its good story and not because of money.

“Gusto kong mapunan ‘yung pagiging artistic ko. Kaysa yung tinatawag na ‘tugtug pera’, ayaw ko naman ng ganoon. So this time talaga kahit anong i-offer sa akin basta maganda yung role ay kakagatin ko talaga,” Brosas said.

K Brosas is also known for singing jazzy blues tunes. She is also the lead singer of the group, K and the Boxers. She has appeared on different shows over GMA-7 and won the Consumer’s Choice Best Actress in a comedy role.

Billy Crawford: Coming home to host PDA Season 2

BY JOSEPH PIMENTEL
ABS-CBN North America News Bureau
STUDIO CITY, California – It’s 1:15 p.m. when Fil-Am singer Billy Crawford, driving in his white BMW SUV rolled into the Marie et Cie coffee house parking lot. He arrived Filipino time – over an hour late for our scheduled interview.
Dressed in an apple lime green sweatshirt and matching shoes, Crawford looked every bit a young, hip superstar living in Los Angeles. Sporting a clean cut chinstrap, he wore a long piece of bling - a silver chain with a large cross that draped to his stomach, black shades covering his eyes, and a black baseball cap tilted sideways. His every movement exuded coolness.
“I’m sorry we’re late,” said Crawford jokingly pointing a finger at his manager Arnold Vegafria. “We got stuck in traffic. We came from Anaheim,” said Vegafria.
Fans hope there won’t be any delay when Pinoy pop star Crawford is scheduled to head back to the Philippines on May 27. In the next few months, he’s tapped to host three of ABS-CBN’s most popular shows, including Pinoy Dream Academy, ASAP, and Your Song.
ABS-CBN’s North America News Bureau sat down with the 26-year-old singer, who just celebrated his birthday less than a week ago. Crawford opened up about his new hosting gigs for ABS-CBN, current contract issues, romantic involvements, living in Los Angeles, the future of his music career, and more.
L.A. life

For the past two years, Crawford has been living in Los Angeles to pursue his music career and to be closer to his parents in Texas. After five years of living and recording music in France and 10-years in New York prior to that, he was homesick and decided to change locations.   “My parents aren’t getting any younger,” he said. “I moved here so I could be closer to them. Los Angeles, Texas, and New York – my parent’s are right in the middle.”

With his birthday passing, he admits this is a real big year for him.   Crawford said he’s just excited to go back home and work in the Philippines. “First of all it’s my pleasure to go back to the Philippines,” he said. “I’m excited to go back to the Philippines to be honest with you. No matter what I do as long as I’m back in the Philippines working – it’s all good to me. It’s a blessing.”
Crawford said he looks forward to hosting the shows. He admits to not having seen an episode of Pinoy Dream Academy and that he’s inexperienced at hosting a television show but it’s certainly a challenge he’s willing to face.  “Hosting is actually a new thing for me,” said Crawford. “I haven’t really hosted since I did my own TV show (MOVE). But it’s going to be fun. I think the most important thing is to come back to the Philippines and touch base, touch roots with the fans and the people who support me the most no matter where I am and what I do in the world.”
Besides hosting, he is working on an album (distributed by ABS-CBN and Universal) to be released worldwide some time in December, and perhaps perform with Sarah Geronimo in a concert at the Araneta Coliseum in the fall.
As to what fans should expect from Crawford’s when they see him on air, he said, “Expect a better Billy Crawford and a lot of fun times on TV. You’ll be seeing me do my thing as usual – dancing, singing and hosting. These three or four months I’m going to be in the Philippines is going to be very, very busy for me.”
But once Crawford lands in the Philippines, speculations about his contract situation will certainly arise. He’s a well-known GMA star, hosting on rival ABS-CBN shows. He is sure to add fuel to the two rival networks’ battle for talent.
“I have so many things going on,” said Crawford, a bit bothered by the question. “So to come back home to the Philippines and to hear about all these contracts… you know what, God will guide me. He will bless me wherever I need to go and this is the route and the road I have to go to now so I’m excited. I’m excited to come back but the contract thing, that’s between my management and everybody else. So I can’t really add anymore input into that.”
No time for love

Crawford also dismisses rumors regarding his split with former manager German Moreno. “Kuya Germs was never my manager,” he said. “He’s been more of a guidance  for me since I was young but never did he manage me.”

Crawford did not want to discuss anything else regarding Moreno saying, “I have to speak to Kuya Germs first.”
He said he’s happy with the current state of his career and looking forward to working with superstars like Sarah Geronimo, Bea Alonzo, Anne Curtis, Kim Chui, Iya Villania, and Angel Locsin at the Kapamilya network.
Crawford also knows that once he arrives in the Philippines the tabloids are going to have a field day about possible romantic involvements during his short stay. This is after all a guy who once went out with Mandy Moore.
“Not right now,” he said about current romances. “No. I’m just roaming around doing my thing. I’m just really enjoying my life right now.”  He said it’s tough to balance the rigors of his music career with a romantic relationship. “If you really care enough for that person you want to give them the time,” he said. “This business right now it’s hard to find time but it’s not that hard…I’m just way too young to be in something serious right now.”
Crawford maintains he’s just way too focused on his career to be sidetracked. He’s reached musical success in France and other parts of Europe, however, fame in the Greater UK and US have so far eluded him. His goal is to penetrate those markets.
The US is one of the hardest places to penetrate because of all the homegrown talent it produces, he said.
With all the success he’s reaped so far, expect Crawford to soon one day hit mainstream popularity all around the world especially in the US.  “I’m just going to make the best of everything we do.”

Star Circle Quest finalist Roxanne Guinoo continues to prove her mettle as a dramatic actress as she topbills ABS-CBN’s newest daytime TV series “Ligaw na Bulaklak,” which premiered last May 26 after “Wowowee.”

Roxanne, last seen in the action series “Palos,” essays the challenging role of  Lea Alegro – a woman scorned by her childhood memories and need to fulfill her life’s promise to bind her family together. Lea is a “whisperer” to a champion horse.

Will life allow her to be happy? Or, will she continue being just a “Ligaw na Bulaklak?”

Following the success of “Prinsesa ng Banyera,” “Ligaw na Bulaklak” also taps Andoy as its director and Ara Mina as main contravida Janet, whose immense love for a guy pushes her to do unimaginable things.

“This will be a groundbreaking series,” says direk Andoy. “You will see a different Roxanne here. She will play a horse whisperer. You will also see how talented our cast members are.”

This series also marks a milestone in the cast’s respective careers – Kjwan vocalist and vj Marc Abaya makes his acting debut as one of Roxanne’s leading men Francis, a romantic, well-educated lad. After playing the mentor in the hit “Kung Fu Kids,” multi-awarded actor Sid Lucero plays romantic lead Billy, Lea’s childhood sweetheart. Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno makes a showbiz comeback as Mon, a self-made man whose undying love for a woman continues to inspire him to do good. Coco Martin also makes his kapamilya debut as Ronel, Lea’s brother.

“Ligaw na Bulaklak” also features the love triangle of Matteo Guidicelli, Erich Gonzales and Carla Humphries. Also included in the cast are Smokey Manoloto, Arlene Muhlach, Ron Morales, Jaymee Joaquin, Nonie Buencamino, Joem Bascon, and Chokoleit with the special participation of Jodi Sta Maria.

Catch “Ligaw ng Bulaklak” weekdays after “Wowowee” on ABS-CBN.
