Doctor presents some inconvenient truths on Baguio’s water

BAGUIO CITY–“Let us not wait for our river to become one of the most polluted like the (Marilao, Meycauayan and Obando river system) in Bulacan,” Dr. Julie Camdas-Cabato, one of Baguio’s leading physicians and environmentalists, pleaded last Earth Day.

She was pleading for the restoration of the Sagudin-Balili River during a water forum at the
multi-purpose center of city hall. She had with her a list of local “inconvenient truths”, topped by the fact that the water body that forms from Baguio is already polluted.

The central business district is the biggest polluter, she said. The Baguio Water District’s deep wells within the Balili tributaries pump up 12,000 cubic meters daily, she added.

She has more:

-The Baguio sewer system has reached its designed capacity for 8,600 to 9,000 cubic meter per day.

-Fifty nine percent of residents do not pay the sewer system fee.

-There is no comprehensive data base on the state of the city’s sewer system and sanitation infrastructure.

“To address these issues is a daunting challenge for all citizens,” she admitted. “They seem insurmountable especially when you go on the ground, but with courage and hope we can face the challenges.”

She noted the renewed efforts of some barangays within the headwaters to clean their portions of the tributaries: Gibraltar under punong barangay Orlando Flores, M. Roxas under Rogelio de Vera, Cabinet Hill-Teachers Camp under Jaime Rillorta, Sto. Nino (Slaughterhouse) under Ramon Ramos, and North Sanitary Camp led by punong barangay Virgilio Orca Jr.

In their reports, some of the barangay officials admitted their initial clean-ups seemed ineffective but will continue. Flores earlier brushed aside a suggestion to tap students for the work, saying residents would be more encouraged not to dump their trash once they experience retrieving their own waste.

Gibraltar is on a survey to pinpoint houses without septic tanks and with sewer lines dumping waste into the tributary straddling the barangay.

Flores hopes the data would revive and support the barangay’s request years back for the city to consider connecting some septic tanks to the main sewer lines. As the treatment plant has already overshot it capacity, he said building satellite plants or cluster septic tanks may be the alternatives.

“The need to put up more treatment plants should already be on the drawing board within the year instead of having it linger like our problem at the Irisan dumpsite,” Cabato said.

Cabato, secretary-general of the Baguio Regreening Movement, an inter-agency group at the forefront of the city’s environmental concerns, recently headed a committee looking into the state of the river, leading to a tie-up with the barangays.

“Let us not wait for epidemics to happen, like it did in other parts of the country,” Cabato appealed.

Her reference to the dubious distinction of the Marilao-Meycauayan-Obando river system was based on a listing last year of the most polluted places in the developing world by the Blacksmith Institute, an environmental watchdog based in New York.

Blacksmith said the river “is home to hundreds of thousands of people and numerous industries, most of which pump their wastewater untreated into the river. Carcinogenic hexavalent chromium, lea, and human sewage are just a few components of this toxic stew, which the local population relies on as a source of domestic and agricultural water.”

The institute has teamed up with other agencies to study the extent of pollution, towards coming up with a river rehabilitation plan.

The institute is encouraging nominations for “the most polluted places” this year.

Unlike Marilao, Baguio can’t blame any neighbor for the pollution of the Sagudin-Balili River which begins from its rivulets and creeks. – Ramon Dacawi.

Betty la Fea (ABS-CBN) and Kim Sam Soon (GMA)

Young actress Bea Alonso will play the lead role in ABS-CBN’s adaptation of the Mexican telenovela “Betty La Fea.”

The confirmation was made by television director Wenn Deramas.

“Yes, gagawin na nga ‘yung Betty La Fea,” said Deramas.

Deramas said he will be meeting today with other network officials to discuss the series.

“May meeting nga ako kasi gusto na nila na simulan ‘yung Betty La Fea. Mayroon pang “Dyosa” kaya pag-iisipin ko din kung paano,” Deramas added.

Betty La Fea is the story of a not-so-pretty but intelligent woman who falls in love with her boss and decides to have a makeover.

Contenders for La Fea

Prior to Deramas’ confirmation that Alonso will play Betty La Fea, there were other actresses being considered for the role.

They were “Lobo” star Angel Locsin and “Maging Sino Ka Man” mainstay Anne Curtis.

Earlier reports had said singer Regine Velasquez was also considered for the series.

In February, Velasquez appeared on the entertainment show “The Buzz.” She said she was the one who broached the idea to “someone” that she wanted to play the role of “Betty La Fea”, or Ugly Betty, in the Philippine edition of the popular TV series. The show was first aired in Mexico and it later had a successful US version.

The singer said that her interest in doing “Betty La Fea” and her excitement over the subsequent offer from ABS-CBN first made her decide to say good-bye to GMA-7.

Velasquez emphasized that she was genuinely interested in doing the series. She pointed out that she would not have risked employment at GMA-7 and her good relations with the station if she was merely creating a ruse to get better terms for her new contract.

In the end, Velasquez decided to stay with GMA-7.

Regine has also started taping for the Pinoy version of the Koreanovela My Name Is Kim Sam Soon and her solo musical show titled Songbird. In My Name Is Kim Sam Soon, the singer-actress will be paired for the first time with Mark Anthony Fernandez and Wendell Ramos.

Earlier this year, Regine almost transferred to ABS-CBN after being considered to play the lead role in the Pinoy version of the Colombian telenovela Betty La Fea. But in the end, the Asia’s Songbird opted to stay in the Kapuso network.

Cristine Reyes as Eva Fonda(ABS-CBN)

Actress and new ABS-CBN Kapamilya contract star Cristine Reyes admitted that she was “stunned” when she and actor Dennis Trillo bumped into former beauty queen Carlene Aguilar at the Edsa Shangri-La Plaza.

In an interview over The Buzz on Sunday, Reyes admitted to host Boy Abunda that she and Trillo had just finished watching a movie when they bumped into Aguilar.

Aguilar has a son, 19-month-old Calix Aguilar, fathered by Trillo.

“Siyempre naman Tito Boy, of all the people na makikita namin siya pa. Nakakawindang talaga yon. Natawa lang kami, totally, of all people, talagang small world. Sorry nabigla talaga kami, hindi namin alam gagawin namin. Stunned ako,” Reyes told Abunda.

(Of course, Tito Boy, of all people we had to bump into her. It was crazy. We laughed about it afterwards. It’s really a small world. I’m sorry we were really surprised. We didn’t know what to do. I was stunned.)

Reyes was reacting to tabloid reports that said she and Trillo “snubbed” Aguilar when they all met by accident at the mall.

Reyes however was quick to dispel speculations that she and Trillo are back together as lovers.

“Totoo po nag-watch kami ng movie. Walang balikan na nangyari sa amin. Hindi po siya nanliligaw. Pero malapit kami kasi siyempre may past kami,” she said.

(It’s true that we watched a movie. But we never got back together. He’s not courting me. We’re close because of our past.)

The actress also told Abunda that her decision to move to ABS-CBN from her old network GMA-7 does not necessarily mean that she ungrateful to the people who helped her gain some measure of fame.

“Hindi ko nakalimutan magpasalamat sa lahat ng binigay nila sa akin. I’m thankful dahil ginawa nila si Cristine Reyes,” she said.

Regarding GMA-7’s earlier statement that the network let her go because of “unprofessional behavior”, the actress said that others defend her work ethic instead.

“Mas maganda siguro kung tanungin nila yung mga taong nakatrabaho ko na Dumadating ako on-time. Ginagawa ko ang lahat ng pinapagawa nila sa akin. Hindi ako nag iinarte sa work,” she said.

(It’s better for them to ask those whom I have worked with. I arrive to work on time. I do everything I’m asked to do. I’m not fussy about work.)

Reyes also denied rumors linking her romantically to “Wowowee” host Willie Revillame.

“We’re friends. At hanggang doon na lang yon (that’s all there is to it),” she said.

Unfair

Reyes first came under fire when she began appearing in “Wowowee” and other ABS-CBN shows in January, even though she was a GMA-7 talent.

GMA-7’s official statement said that Reyes is ” welcome to leave. The network has a lot more serious artists to assign important projects and develop into fine, professional actors. That being said, GMA network has now closed its doors on Cristine.”

In an earlier interview with radio dzMM, Reyes’ lawyer Dexter Licuanan said that GMA-7’s statement about her “bad behavior” and being unprofessional gives a wrong impression to viewers.

“I just wanted to correct the impression that the reason they let her go daw was because of her very bad and unprofessional behavior which is very inaccurate, to begin with. Her contract has expired so it’s but right for them to release her,”  Reyes’ lawyer Dexter Licuanan told abs-cbnNEWS.com in an interview before his guesting with dzMM’s entertainment program “Showbiz Mismo.”

“She has gone through the process of observing the rules of courtesy by signifying to them formally her intentions to leave,” Licuanan added.

The lawyer explained that Reyes’ contract with the rival network ended this year. He said that after evaluating the contract, he concluded that the contract is already expired without any mandatory extensions.

“Mayroong usually mandatory extensions sa ganyang mga management contract but what I would want to emphasize [that this] contract na tinuturo nila ay  management contract. So hindi po ito exclusive artist  contract that she signed on sa GMA 7–it’s through Artist Center, iyon lang po ang pinag-uusapan diyan,” he said.

Proper channels

Licuanan criticized the statement, saying it was really unfair for his client to be branded as unprofessional.

“The allegation that Cristine was unprofessional, I think it is unfair bakit po? Kasi we went through the proper channels, in writing. We send them letters signifying her intentions to leave.

“Number two iyong alleged frequent appearance of Cristine referred to her promotion for the movie she made with her ate Ara Mina entitled ‘Ate.’ Hindi ako na-consult about that, but I actually told her to try and for courtesy sake to secure permission and I think she was able to do that,” the lawyer added.

ABS-CBN not managing Reyes

Licuanan made it clear that Reyes’ contract with ABS-CBN is only for specific projects. This does not mean that ABS-CBN will be managing her career.

“Gusto ko lang liwanagin hindi po siya lilipat sa ABS-CBN. Ang gusto lang ni Cristine she wanted to have independence to be able to make appearances in programs not only in channel 7  and on also  to appear on shows of ABS-CBN… she wanted to have an artist’s license  to try on different projects pero wala siyang management contract na pipirmahan so hindi siya pipirma sa Star Magic for management contract.

Reyes signed contract with ABS-CBN on April 9 to star in a remake of the 1970s hit film “Eva Fonda 16.”

The original version of that film was released  in 1976 by Sampaguita Pictures. It was the movie that launched the career of then upcoming star Alma Moreno.

It is also said that the movie also contributed to the popularity of the bomba (sexy) films in the country.
